Il micologo e storico australiano Heino Lepp cura da più di un decennio il sito dedicato ai funghi degli Australian National Botanic Gardens, inclusa la rubrica "Case Studies - Snippets, Stories and Studies".

L'anno scorso ha finalmente raccolto in un volume di oltre 400 pagine (più un secondo volume di appendici, note ed indice di quasi 300 pagine) i suoi estesissimi "Snippets of mycological history", pubblicandola privatamente in tiratura limitatissima, e in edizione digitale (pdf).

Frutto di anni di meticolosa ricerca ad ampio raggio a documentare la storia della micologia, il libro spazia dagli albori della conoscenza dei funghi in vari contesti culturali, e traccia numerose escursioni attraverso le varie epoche della disciplina - che per lui si dividono in anni "BM and AM: Before Micheli and After Micheli" - a dirimere ove possibile nessi e riferimenti, qui-pro-quo e refusi, origini e sviluppi di un ampio spettro di concetti, vocaboli, iconografie e assunti pertinenti al nostro misurarci con l'organismo fungo nel tempo.

Come spiega nel suo preambolo "this is not a detailed history of mycology but simply a presentation of a few topics that interest me", partendo dal classico "Introduction to the history of mycology" di G.C. Ainsworth, del 1976. Specifica: "I give more detail about some topics treated by Ainsworth and include a few that are not in his work. I include numerous colour illustrations, something that would have been very expensive to do in print in 1976. I stress again that these Snippets deal with an idiosyncratic selection of topics." Il suo è un libro inteso per un pubblico non oltremodo specializzato: "You do not need any prior knowledge of mycological history to understand any of the topics in this work. However, I do assume that you are familiar with basic fungal terminology, for example agaric, basidium, discomycete, hypha, mycelium, decurrent gills – to list a few such terms".
